Over 1,000 Cases Now Included in K&L Gates' E-Discovery Case Database
Electronic Discovery Law, 07/03/08
We are pleased to announce that our searchable case database now contains over 1,000 e-discovery cases from state and federal jurisdictions, with new cases being added every week. Now more than ever, our database is an excellent source of information on developing e-discovery case law around the country.

Remove Hidden Metadata from Word Documents
TechnoEsq, 07/02/08
Unfortunately, metadata has curtailed one of the courtesies attorneys in litigation formerly exhibited through providing discovery requests in an electronic format so that opposing counsel didn’t have to have his assistant re-type your requests when answering discovery.

Is E-Mail Evidence Less Persuasive?
EDD Update, 06/20/08
I suppose it says something about your status in life if you are pleased or appalled to see Wall Street titans with eight-figure incomes taken away in handcuffs and booked. It's a bit like the lawyers in Qualcomm v Broadcom: we can identify with them until the lying starts, and then we no longer see ourselves in their moccasins.

Open Text Delivers Comprehensive Matter Lifecycle Management Solution for Law Firms

Open Text

LegalTech New York 2008 - 2008-02-05 - Open Text™ (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC), a global leader in enterprise content management (ECM), today introduced a new solution for law firms that provides Open Text's matter lifecycle management and law practice support solutions for law firms on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. The solution, called Open Text Legal Information Management, SharePoint Edition, combines the power of Open Text's specialized legal industry expertise in matter lifecycle management and proactive compliance, with the collaboration and document management capabilities of Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Open Text will be presenting the new solution Feb. 5th, 10:30 a.m.-11:15 a.m., at the LegalTech New York 2008 conference, Nassau B meeting room, and will be offering demonstrations in the Open Text booth, #2003, throughout the week.

The company announced plans for the solution in August, 2007, to help law firms address the complex challenges of managing sensitive client matters, while improving firm productivity and collaboration. Today's increasingly global, geographically dispersed law firms must keep legal teams interconnected and working effectively together. At the same time, they must improve control and consistency in the way information is managed. Attorneys and staff must maintain content in matter-centric or practice-centric views, with all information, including emails, managed through defined lifecycles.

SharePoint Server 2007 is growing as the productivity infrastructure choice for law firms interested in deploying easy-to-use portal, collaboration, content management and search capabilities firm wide. Open Text's legal solutions are tailored to specific law firm processes and client matter lifecycles, developed through years of experience delivering solutions to many of the world's largest law firms.

Leveraging Open Text's new solution, attorneys and staff can work in the familiar SharePoint Server 2007 environment, while managing their matters according to strict business processes. The Open Text solution for SharePoint Server 2007 provides firms with matter and practice-centric views of content, virtual file cabinets and seamless integration with a firm's core business processes. Attorneys can access documents and email in different repositories; perform federated searches across matters; and automatically assign metadata to allow correct classification of documents. Firms can also use Open Text's Enterprise Library Services with SharePoint Server 2007 to provide records management and long-term archiving that helps meet compliance requirements.

"Innovative firms are looking to technology to gain an edge in an increasingly competitive market," said Brian Zeve, Managing Director, Microsoft Professional Services Industry Solutions. "The time is now to invest in technology, deliver more value to clients and stand out in the marketplace. Together with Open Text, Microsoft is empowering employees within law firms to improve productivity, extend the boundaries of collaboration, and provide better document controls and processes."

"Balancing collaboration with the need to meet the requirements of a complex business and operating model has been a struggle for law firms," said Mohit Thawani, Business Development Manager of Legal Solutions at Open Text. "Our domain knowledge, combined with the power of SharePoint products and technologies, offers a completely new approach that is already proving its value for today's increasingly global 24/7 law firms." Thawani discussed the power of combining Open Text's legal solutions and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server in a recent podcast.

Open Text is a leader in delivering solutions that extend the Microsoft platform, and has been first to market with new capabilities that enhance SharePoint Server 2007 (http://www.opentext.com/news/pr.html?id=1874). Open Text and Microsoft recently released a podcast on how the companies work together to deliver solutions.
