Over 1,000 Cases Now Included in K&L Gates' E-Discovery Case Database
Electronic Discovery Law, 07/03/08
We are pleased to announce that our searchable case database now contains over 1,000 e-discovery cases from state and federal jurisdictions, with new cases being added every week. Now more than ever, our database is an excellent source of information on developing e-discovery case law around the country.

Remove Hidden Metadata from Word Documents
TechnoEsq, 07/02/08
Unfortunately, metadata has curtailed one of the courtesies attorneys in litigation formerly exhibited through providing discovery requests in an electronic format so that opposing counsel didn’t have to have his assistant re-type your requests when answering discovery.

Is E-Mail Evidence Less Persuasive?
EDD Update, 06/20/08
I suppose it says something about your status in life if you are pleased or appalled to see Wall Street titans with eight-figure incomes taken away in handcuffs and booked. It's a bit like the lawyers in Qualcomm v Broadcom: we can identify with them until the lying starts, and then we no longer see ourselves in their moccasins.

Thomson West Announces West km 4.0

Thomson West

EAGAN, Minn., Feb. 4, 2008 - West km™, the market-leading knowledge management application from Thomson West that lets legal professionals capture and maximize their expertise and intellectual assets, now offers powerful new productivity capabilities in the newly released West km 4.0 platform.

West km 4.0 features a new technology platform plus enhanced search and classification functionality, giving users a powerful competitive edge by making institutional knowledge and expertise broadly available to legal professionals within an organization.

"Experience is the competitive edge," said George May, vice president of West Solutions. "The new West km platform was designed to meet the needs of legal professionals who need to share their institutional knowledge and conduct precise searches through this amassed information to identify an issue and solve it as efficiently and effectively as possible."

The new West km 4.0 platform enables users to mine key data directly from texts of documents through Litigation Analyzer, a new West km feature.

West km 4.0 offers customers the ability to:

  • Extract the key metadata directly from the text of litigation documents that includes actual document title, document type, high level jurisdiction and court.
  • View documents with the title as well as content portions, or "snippets" to gauge the document value.
  • Import additional metadata for more complete document retrieval results.
  • Receive frameless delivery of results and documents for improved intranet and portal integration.

First launched in 2002, West km is used by leading AmLaw 250 firms and Fortune 1000 corporate legal departments to capture on-point knowledge about specific legal issues. It searches document archives and seamlessly serves up relevant documents as part of a Westlaw search result - giving legal professionals immediate access to their own proven, authoritative work to support legal strategy, document drafting and other legal work.

West km automatically classifies and collects documents so that only the most relevant materials are captured in the search result. It also includes proven Westlaw functionality like KeyCite® and Case Citator™ to ensure that the underlying decisions are still "good law."

"West km 4.0 saves time, leverages intellectual assets, and provides the confidence that legal strategies and materials are built upon proven, accurate materials," May said. "This adds up to a powerful competitive advantage that pays off when it matters most."
